The benefits of functional fitness training are well documented, below are some examples of different pieces of equipment that we can use to add variety to your training programme. On the left is an example of suspension training which has great all-round fitness benefits. It is easily assembled either indoors or outside and uses your own body weight as resistance. In the middle is a tractor tyre, a great fitness tool and very popular with my clients. It is extremely versatile and makes training fun as it is more task orientated therefore takes your mind off the fact that you are working out! And finally on the right is the sandbag. The sandbag is to be used aggressively, the very nature of it’s instability means that you put your joints under proprioception and work your stabilising and assisting muscles as well as your prime movers – meaning you can get a lot done in a short period of time….and it’s great fun!
